KAWs at the High Museum + OOTD

Things I am good at: eating out, styling strangers, organizing sales, and otherwise making lots of plans.

Things I am not good at: sharing anything about above activities in a timely manner.

KAWS 1
For those of you that also follow Alicia of kittenmasks, you already know that we went to the museum not too long ago.

Culture and art with @kittenmasks.
She recently came back into town, and culture hound that she is, suggested we go see the new KAWS exhibit at the High. I had missed the opening party a few days prior (as is what happens when you work x3 and go to school), so I was immediately on board.

For those of you unfamiliar with KAWS, let's start with the basics. Brooklyn born artist Brian Donnelly spent a chunk of his early career animating backgrounds at Disney. After spending time working on 90s-era cartoons, he decided to return to his first love: graffiti and street art. Because of his unique background, the standard sterile corporate framework and the wild unbound street energy result in the most incredible subversive yet technically perfect pieces.

KAWS 2
You really have to see the exhibit in person to believe. As a former painting student, I was totally blown away by the large scale canvases up close. Every line and stroke is stupidly precise. I was staring at everything so hard I started to worry I'd touch my nose to the canvas and get kicked out.

KAWS 3
That's the end of your contemporary art lesson for the day. This is what I wore to the exhibition.

I thought a eyecatching print in neutral tones would be the perfect complement to the exhibit.

Happy (Belated!) Oktoberfest

Beer Fest 3
Working in downtown Decatur has its perks--there's always a watering hole to meander over to after work. But best of all is festival season. (Okay so maybe it's not a limited-time-only set of festivities.) Festival season is year round, and I'll take any excuse to dress to a theme.

So this year when Decatur Beer Fest rolled around, I needed a German/beer wench outfit. Instead of going for the traditional dirndl, I decided to wear this vintage calico dress. Think Little House on the Prairie meets Oktoberfest.

I've always always wanted a calico Gunne Sax dress, and when I saw this number on Etsy, I didn't think, I just acted. I love the perfectly fitted bodice, whimsical flower buttons, side ties, and poufed sleeves. And oh! The skirt! I was swishing around town and twirling through the store all day.

I can't believe how quickly we're cruising through fall! Only 23 more days until ICE Atlanta! Wait till you see how many things I've knit up for the event. It's going to be pretty epic.

Vintage Days: Sweet Sixteen blouse

August 24 2011 1
I know I've discussed my dilemma of not having anything to wear before on the blog. Okay, it's not that I'm ever without anything to wear, it's more that I am a crazy person and only am excited to buy bright colors (that never match each other) and prints (that never seem to match the aforementioned bright colored things). My shopping resolution for several months has been to incorporate more basics and tame colors that go with everything.

Enter this blouse. I'm just a sucker for a prim collar. And gosh, the pearl buttons and little bow tie at the neck really make it adorable as all heck. This one's gonna be another one that's hard to let go of.

For interested parties, this top is by Rio Blouse from the 80's (80s does 50s/60s steez) and is a size XS/S. I'd be more keen on keeping it for myself if I wasn't trying not to pop buttons open in these photos! Not for the even slightly busty, I suppose. Sigh, such is vintage treasure hunting. Not everything is always the perfect fit. Oh, and priced at $28.

For those of you I won't see on Saturday, don't forget to enter the giveaway! There's prizes for out of towners too!

This post is part of a Vintage miniseries leading up to my participation in VAMP. A little more fun than my everyday outfit posts, but this is more about playing dress-up since I did not wear these in my IRL OOTD. So you vintage mavens, don't worry, I didn't wear this around all day in the sweltering heat before offering it to you! Just for the photoshoot :)

Vintage Days: Mod Squad dress

August 23 2011 2
As a hoarder of things and also a seller of things, can I just say how hard it is to give things up, regardless of how many other of the same thing you already have? Case in point: this dress. Sure I have enough dresses to fill even the largest closet, but there's just something about that kicky pleated skirt and the chelsea collar that make me want to snatch this back and say, "MINE MINE MINE."

If there are no takers this time around, I think I'll finally alter this to fit me and let it stay in my closet as its forever home. She didn't get a second glance at the Athens sale, so there's hope for that!

Approximately a size small/medium, will fit sizes 4-8 depending on your body shape. Priced at $58. I'm willing to negotiate on most items, but this one I'll put up a fight for.

Vintage Days: Little House on the Prairie skirt

August 22 2011 1
First up in this week's Vintage Days posts is this adorable calico number. I'm thrilled that midi-length skirts are in right now, because that is my favorite length to wear! I feel like tea-length hemlines span across multiple eras, and not only are an easy way to make any look more ladylike, they call for heels. Skirt and heels combos of all sorts are so feminine!

This skirt is so Laura Ingalls Wilder to me. Prairie without being over the top. It's from the seventies and has beautiful details--all of the buttons are functional, the top one hidden, and the tie waist lies perfectly flat though it's woven in and out.

She's a size small and will be $34! Come snag her on Saturday! If she doesn't go to a good home, she will be available on Etsy in September.

VAMP, Vintage Week, and a Giveaway!

So we missed out on this week's style roundup, I'm sorry to say. But it's only because I'm working on something even better.

My friends Marji and Jacqueline of PonyUp! Vintage have organized this amazing sale for this weekend.  Dubbed Vintage Apparel Market Place (V.A.M.P. for short!), it's a collection of some of the best vintage sellers in our fine city! June Bug, my favorite vendor at Kudzu will be there (she's the source for this vintage dress!), as well as some big names such as the Clothing Warehouse. It should be a party!

Here are the deets for you lucky local lovelies:

Oh, and Lana and I will be selling there, too of course, under Bunny Day Vintage. I got these super sweet pencils made for the goodie bags being given out at the door.

Since admission costs $5, and I would love to spread the vintage spirit, I'm holding a giveaway!
  • For you locals, you can win free admission, $25 credit to the Bunny Day booth, and one of these fine pencils from me.
  • For those of you who live outside of Atlanta, your prize will be a $25 credit to the Bunny Day Etsy shop (which can be used after the event), and I will send you one of these fine pencils in the mail.
To enter, just fill out the form below! Entries will be accepted until Friday, August 26th, at 5PM EST. The winner will be emailed that evening!

Sorry friends! Giveaway is closed!

And in lieu of the inspiration posts, I will be styling outfits from some of the wares we will be selling! Let the vintage week begin!

City Casual

August 19 2011 4
Trying to soak up these last little tidbits of carefree summer! Classes begin next week and I'll be back to super extra busy mode once again.

Here's a glimpse into a recent summertime event--this new painting on the square in Decatur. No, I cannot take any credit for it, but I did get to see it go up! Well, as much of it as I could, considering I spent most of those days working on the other side of the wall.

And I never really posted my treasures from the Unclaimed Baggage Center trip, but here is one of them. After feeling satisfied from scouring the International section, I halfheartedly flipped through the denim. As I'm not really a pants favoring kind of girl, I was only idly peeking to pass the time. Then I came upon these: brand new Paige jeans with the tags on for $15. I've never owned a pair of Paige, but when they fit, I decided to take them home with me.

Treasure hunting! Popsicle parties! Large scale paintings happening at work! I don't think I want this summer to ever end.

Des Petites Vacances

May 12, 2011

A quickie outfit post and announcement before I run off to work, and weekend social whirlwind!

I just wanted to pop in and say "bonjour" before I say "au revoir" for a couple days--I leave for France on Monday and will be gone for 10 days! Just a little warning before I disappear and spend my time eating desserts and roaming the streets rather than posting on any kind of regular schedule.

May 12, 2011

May 12, 2011

I'll have access to the web and gobs of photos I will surely be snapping, so I will do my best to update from across the sea!

May 12, 2011

Otherwise, I'll see you all very soon!

BFF Style: Meet Lana!

Florals | Everybody, Everywear

You know, I have a lot of stylish ladies in my life, and sometimes I wish more than anything that they were bloggers too. So I took matters into my own hands and decided I would stalk my best friends with my camera.
Lana 5-10_1

This week, meet Lana! She is one of the most adventurous ladies I know when it comes to dressing up, and it always (ALWAYS) looks good. From vintage to Anthro and even Forever 21, she remixes it all. She was my partner-in-crime this past weekend in Athens, and I almost decided to trade for her vintage instead of trying to sell things... Needless to say, hers is a closet I always want to raid.

Lana 5-10_4

Lana 5-10_2

Lana is a total bookworm sometimes. Her current read is Dombey and Son by Dickens.

Lana's signature look is really good bangs. Recently she has been sporting the baby bang, Bettie Page style. I want to copy every haircut she gets. And she alone makes me want to go ginger. Immediately.

Her current online presence is limited to her Etsy site: Limon Chiffon Vintage, but expect her to be a regular on this blog! I plan to stalk her paparazzi style every chance I get.

The Craftermath, plus OOTD

Vintage Market Athens 1

This weekend felt like such a whirlwind! Selling at Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa was such a blast, and Lana and I met some really amazing people. I think we made a lot of new friends, too, which was evidenced by the early lack of friendship bracelets. We were stationed right next door to one of my favorite treasure troves, Agora, and the weather could not have been better!

I think the show combined a few of my favorite things: clothing, design, and styling/merchandising. I was super happy with how the booth turned out. I kept squealing throughout the day, "How cute are we?"

Markus helped me design and cut out these banners. Mine's hanging above my desk right now!

Vintage Market Athens 4

We tried to entice people with our three favorite 60's dresses. The poster was almost an afterthought--I made the design in a panic thinking we needed as much branding and clear signage as possible.

Vintage Market Athens 5

Blogger fail: I didn't get outfits shots of either of us! Lana is wearing a gorgeous vintage terracotta and ivory dress with embroidered and cutout details, and I wore my new Dear Creatures sailor dress from Modcloth.

And since my time was spent talking to vintage enthusiasts and some of the cutest crafters ever, I put the blog on the backburner. Lucky for you, friends, I took outfit photos during the Busy Time and simply didn't have the time to post them. Here's one now!

May 9, 2011

Crop top + high waist bottom = summer uniform. The best part is the nice breeze in the back that eliminates gross summer weather sweaty lower back.
